The Challenge: Earning Cultural Currency in a Saturated Sports Market

FOX needed to launch Undisputed and transform Skip Bayless from a traditional TV commentator into a genuine tailgate icon. The challenge was conceptual and experiential: how do we cut through the noise of crowded rivalry-game environments with a disruptive, fan-fueled campaign that channels the host's controversial energy without appearing overtly promotional? I argued that to reach hardcore fans, we needed to abandon traditional media and become the hot take itself.

 

The Pitch & Action: Directing a 16-Foot Statement of Intent

As the Creative Director, my role was to conceptualize and direct a physical manifestation of a "hot take."

  • Conceptual Breakthrough: I conceived and sold the core strategy for "The Skip Bayless Bobblehead Tour," arguing that, since Skip always has a loud, instant take, he should literally be everywhere there's something to take a stand on. This strategy risked backlash but guaranteed visibility.

  • Hands-On Craft & Execution: I directed the custom production of the 16-foot inflatable bobblehead, designing it to capture Skip’s signature, instant non-verbal judgment (the nod, the side-eye, the head shake). The bobblehead was engineered to be a walking hot take—nodding and judging fans across America’s most intense rivalry games.

  • Multi-Platform Amplification: I directed the campaign to be inherently shareable and meme-friendly, producing real-time footage for FS1 broadcast features, digital promos, and social posts that leveraged fan-generated content and "hot take" themed giveaways (mints and sunscreen).

 

The ROI: Turning Controversy into Broadcast Ratings

The Bobblehead Tour was a massive success, proving that creative audacity could generate high-value earned media and lay the cultural groundwork for a successful show launch:

  • Broadcast Integration: The bobblehead was featured in live broadcasts, gameday commentary, and at Fox headquarters in NYC, becoming a marquee social moment for FS1 and Fox Sports.

  • Organic Reach: Generated thousands of fan-generated posts at each stop, fueling campaign momentum with high-performing UGC.

  • Business Impact: The campaign helped drive strong premiere ratings and awareness for Undisputed, successfully transforming the show's personality into a long-running cultural identity.
